[TWRP 3.0] Difference between restoring /system, and restoring system image?

Hello, I have a Nexus 6P, running TWRP 3.0.0, and was wondering what the difference between restoring the system parition and restoring the system image were, given I thought that the system partition was the place that you would flash the system image.
